Your tools are your trade. If they are stolen or damaged, you cannot work. Here is how tools insurance protects your kit at the workshop, in the van and in transit.

Why tools cover is not optional in practice

For a mechanic, tools are not overheads, they are the business. Without them you cannot take a job, and replacing quality equipment at short notice is expensive, disruptive, and can cost you work while you wait.

A single break-in or an accident that damages a diagnostic unit can put you out of action for days. Tools and equipment insurance exists to turn that from a crisis into a claim, so downtime is measured in a repair or replacement, not in lost weeks.

It is one of the more straightforward covers to arrange, and one of the most commonly claimed on by tradespeople.

Where and when your tools are covered

The strength of a good tools policy is that it does not tie your equipment to one location. Your kit does not stay in one place, so your cover should not either.

  • On your premises, in the workshop or store room
  • In transit, while you move between jobs
  • Locked inside your vehicle overnight or during a job
  • At offsite job sites and customer locations
  • Diagnostic equipment and electronic tools, not just hand tools

Most policies include a single item limit, above which high-value items need to be listed individually on your schedule. If you own a specialist diagnostic unit or an expensive specific tool, it is worth checking it is specified so there is no dispute at claim time.

Theft, damage and how value is settled

Tools cover generally responds to theft, accidental loss and accidental damage. Theft from a locked vehicle is commonly included, which matters because a van is one of the most common places tools are targeted.

How your claim is settled depends on whether cover is arranged on an agreed value or market value basis. Agreed value fixes what your gear is worth up front, so there is no argument about depreciation when you claim. Market value settles on what the item is worth at the time of loss.

Keeping a simple record of your tools, with photos and serial numbers, makes any claim far smoother and helps prove ownership and value.

Keeping your cover current

Mechanics invest in new equipment regularly, and a tools policy is only as good as the schedule behind it. Newly purchased equipment can usually be added mid-policy, so it makes sense to notify your broker when you make a significant purchase.

We can help you review your schedule, confirm your high-value items are captured, and make sure the way your cover settles suits how you work. Tell us what you carry and we will help you arrange it properly.
